Here in the Yukon, our summers may be short - but it makes us appreciate them that much more! When the warm weather arrives, you better believe that we’re ready to pack up the car, put on a great playlist and hit the open road for some sunny adventures with our friends and families. So what’s good around Whitehorse, BC? Today on the blog, our Whitehorse Toyota team is sharing some of our favourite destinations across the Yukon (along with the best Toyota vehicles to get you there!) to give you some road trip inspiration for summer 2020.
Just a short drive from Whitehorse, Miles Canyon is the perfect place to escape the city and enjoy some easy hiking with the whole family. This nature reserve is well known for its unique geography (formed by lava flows and salt fields over thousands of years), collection of native plants and animals, the rushing waters of the Yukon River and of course the Robert Lowe Suspension Bridge, which provides a picturesque vantage point of the entire canyon.
The hiking trails at Miles Canyon are relaxed enough for Grandma and Grandpa to tackle, and its proximity to Whitehorse makes it easy to visit for a few hours before heading home in time for the kids’ afternoon naps. Pile the whole gang into a roomy Toyota SUV, like the popular RAV4 or the fully redesigned 8-seater Highlander, and get ready to hit the highway in comfort and style.

We couldn’t decide on our favourite day-to-weekend trip from Whitehorse, so we’re highlighting two! The Takhini Hot Springs are a pair of natural mineral pools where you can relax, and let the hustle and bustle of busy weekday life wash away. SItuated on 200 acres, you’ll have plenty of options for walking, hiking and picnicking before soaking your tired legs in the therapeutic waters of the springs. Located just under 30 kilometres from Whitehorse, this day trip is just far enough to make you feel as though you truly escaped the city.
For a full weekend adventure, we love the idea of heading south towards the BC border to Watson Lake. This gorgeous Southern Yukon lake, which was completely transformed after undergoing a $7-million renovation in the early 2000s, is big on fun and adventure, offering endless possibilities for water sports and recreational activities. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out SIgn Post Forest - a unique outdoor museum of more than 77,000 signs brought from visitors from all over the world. Watson Lake is just shy of a 5-hour drive from downtown Whitehorse, and a fuel-efficient Toyota sedan or hybrid is more than up to the challenge of getting you there and back without breaking the bank. Check out our selection of gas-saving Toyota Hybrids, and popular commuter cars like Corolla and Camry!

Although this road trip isn’t for the faint of heart, we can promise that a visit to Tombstone Territorial Park will be completely worth every second of the adventure. You’ll have to travel north about 500 kilometres to get there, but you’ll be greeted by an ancient landscape, mountain peaks and the type of flora and fauna that you can only see when you’re a mere 300 kilometres from the Arctic Circle. While you’re there, enjoy plentiful hiking, overnight camping and explore some of the best preserved First Nations archaeological sites and cemeteries in Canada.
Due to its proximity to the north and general remoteness, a road trip to Tombstone Territorial Park is best tackled during the summer months, and requires a high level of planning and packing. Set yourself up for success with a dependable pickup truck like the Toyota Tundra, or a rugged SUV like the Toyota 4Runner, that can handle diverse terrain, has enough cargo space for all of your gear, and will provide a comfortable ride for hours on end.
